best scooter for toddlers 2018

Kids have energy. And they have a lot of it, to put it mildly.

Especially when they’re younger, it can seem like they will never tire out!

They’re constantly running, exploring and getting into things.

One great way to get out their energy – or better, allow them to express their energy is through a scooter!

Kids love anything where they can travel on wheels.

Whether it be on a bike, or roller blades, a wagon, or in this case a scooter.

Not only is it fun for them but it’ll teach them motor skills, that it’s okay to fall down, and a little bit of independence!

But of course, you don’t want your toddler zipping around on just any old scooter.

Like with everything else for your kids, you only want them on the best scooter for toddlers.

There are lots of choices out there, but we’ve compiled a list of the best ones out there for you to choose from. No matter what your child is into, you’ll find the perfect scooter for them on this list.

1

Razor Jr. Folding Kiddie Kick Scooter - Easy to Transport

best scooter for kids

If you’ve ever ridden a scooter, no matter how old you are, you’ve probably step foot onto a Razor scooter at one point in your life.

Why is that?

Because they make great scooters for everybody from toddlers to adults. The Razor Jr. Folding Kiddie Kick Scooter is no exception to this rule.

This, of course, features a three-wheel design which is much easier to learn on. It’s made of high-quality aluminum and steel.

But to be on the safe side:

Most of the aluminum and steel is covered in plastic. For safety reasons, of course.

There are foam handles and a wide platform for your child to stand and balance on.

In other words, it’s the perfect scooter for toddlers while also being safe. And for your sake, it’s easy to assemble so your child will be up a scootering around in no time.

PROS
  • Plastic protects from injury
  • Folds up, easy to transport
  • Easy to assemble
CONS
  • The two wheels in the back is harder to learn on
2

Micro Mini Kick Scooter Original - Easy to Balance On

mini kick scooter

If you’re observant, you’ll notice one major difference between this scooter and the last.

Any guesses?

They both have three wheels but the last one had two in the back and this one has two in the front.

What could possibly be the difference, you might ask?

Having two wheels in the front makes it easier to steer.

And it also makes it easier to learn how to steer.

It makes it that much easier to swerve and go from left to right as your excited toddler zooms down the sidewalk.

The wheels are high-quality polyurethane.

The standing deck is wide and low and it’s easy to balance on.

Another cool part?

This scooter comes in eight different colors! Color choice might not be as important with adults, but with kids, it’s a whole different story.

If you buy something in their favorite color, it can be the deciding factor in them loving… or hating what you buy them.

There’s something for everyone with the Micro Mini Original Kick Scooter.

PROS
  • Comes in 8 different colors
  • Super easy to balance on
CONS
  • Harder for young young kids (2-3)
3

radio flyer my first scooter

Are you looking for something that’s extra sturdy?

Maybe your child is a bit…

Clumsy.

That’s okay! Weren’t we all clumsy as children?

This scooter is perfect for an intro scooter as the base is extra wide and extra low. It also features a brake on the back wheel for ultimate control.

There’s an ergonomic grip handle as well so it’s comfortable for your child to hold for long periods of time.

As far as the wheels –

We love the fact that there are two wheels in front.

This is the best way to learn for a couple of different reasons:

  • They’re easier to steer.
  • It’s harder to fall.

Those are two major components when you’re learning how to ride a scooter.

The one downside?

This scooter only supports up to 50 pounds. This is fine if you have a smaller toddler! But it’s definitely not recommended for children bigger than that.

Overall, this is one of the best scooters for kids.

PROS
  • Perfect for just learning
  • Made out of safe material
CONS
  • Only supports up to 50 pounds
  • Not great for your child to grow with

The word Razor has become synonymous with the word scooter after a long history of just about every child owning a Razor scooter at one point in their lives.

This one features:

  • A wide, slip-resistant deck and wide rear wheel base to make sure you don’t fall.
  • A padded T-Bar.
  • And support up to 45 pounds. This isn’t necessarily the biggest capacity around but it should do the trick for most children.
  • The wheels are high-quality as well so they glide smoothly over any surface.

We are impressed with this scooter from Razor and it just proves they can make a scooter for anyone – toddlers and adults included!

Vokul VK-1281F - Large Color Variety

toddler scooter

One important factor that you might not consider when purchasing a scooter is….

Colors!

We’ve mentioned this before but it’s so true!

What color the scooters come in can be just as important as the scooter itself.

Think about it.

If your child’s favorite color is yellow, wouldn’t they prefer a yellow scooter that might not be as good on paper as opposed to a red scooter that is supposedly a “better scooter”?

Thankfully, the Vokul VK-1281F comes in five different colors:

Green, light blue, navy blue, pink, and orange!

Aside from the color options, this still is a great scooter. It features shock-absorbing wheels that also light up!

The rear deck is also super wide and can easily fit both feet on it.

It’s easy to assemble and also easy to adjust the bar to any height! This also has one of the largest weight capacities at 77 pounds!

This is definitely a scooter that your child will be able to grow into.

Of course, this will depend on their exact height, but it does support up to 80 pounds!

Not too shabby.

This scooter is lightweight, so it’s easy to carry.

It’s made out of eco-friendly materials so it’s good for the environment.

Another amazing thing?

The wheels light up! What’s better to a kid than a scooter with wheels light up?

Go ahead. Try and come up with something. We’ll wait.

Not only is it cool, but it’s also safe at night because it makes it easier to see where you’re scootering.

There are three color options and we’re thoroughly impressed with this Mini Kick Scooter from Voyage Sports.

CONS
  • Difficult to put together

Aside from having a lot of colors to choose from, there’s another important thing you should look out for in your toddler’s scooter.

And what is that?

You want your toddler to be able to grow into their scooter!

Toddlers are growing so quickly.

The last thing that you want is for them to not be able to use their scooter after a year or even six months.

The Micro Mini Deluxe Kick Scooter will perfectly allow your child to grow into their scooter for a couple of years.

The T-Bar adjusts up from 17” to 25”.

It also supports up to 75 pounds, comes in eight different colors, and it’s super easy to steer! This scooter is definitely high up on our list for the best scooter for toddlers.

Voyage Kids Kick Scooter - Good For Ages 3 to 7

Voyage has created another stellar scooter.

This time?

It’s better for a wider range of kids! The previous one was mainly targeted at kids age 2-5.

This scooter?

It‘s perfect for kids aged 3-7 with a maximum weight of 110 pounds! If you’re a tiny adult, you could possibly still use this.

It also comes with a one-year limited warranty so it will be able to withstand anything your child puts it through.

There are light-up front wheels that fire up the pulsating multi-color lights so it’s easier to see once it starts to get dark.

The deck is also super low to the ground, making it easier to balance for beginners.

Voyage really amped it up with this scooter.

If you’re deciding between this or the other Voyage scooter and your child is a bit older (3-5), we definitely recommend this scooter over the other.

PROS
  • Deck low to the ground, easy to balance

Rimable Kids 3 Wheel Adjustable Height - Perfect For the Younger Kids

toddler scooter amazon

If your child is a rough and tumble kind of child and they’re frequently getting hurt,

Consider the Rimable Kids 3 Wheel Adjustable Height scooter.

The deck has a plastic covering over it so if it does make its way to your kid’s ankles, they won’t be hurt nearly as bad as if the metal was showing all around.

The front two wheels are bigger than the back wheel for added stability.

However, they all light up! This is actually different than some of the others we’ve seen.

Often times only two out of the three wheels light up.

With all three wheels lighting up, your child will more easily be able to see exactly where they’re going.

Furthermore, you’ll be able to see them more easily!

It’s a win-win for everybody.

Take notice, however, as this is definitely geared towards much younger kids so we suggest buying this if your child is two or three.

Definitely not suited for six-year-olds plus.

PROS
  • Great for younger kids
  • Safe design
CONS
  • Child will outgrow quickly
10

Radio Flyer Ride 2 Glide - Perfect As Very First Scooter

best scooter for toddlers

A lot of these scooters are made for toddlers,

But they are also meant for older kids (usually up to five, six, or seven).

Don’t get us wrong! This can definitely be a good thing.

However – it can also mean it’s more difficult for the younger age group to navigate on the scooters.

The Radio Flyer Ride 2 Glide takes that concern out of the picture.

This scooter can initially be used as a sit-down scooter to make sure your child has gotten used to the motion of the scooter.

And then, as soon as they feel comfortable enough to stand up, it immediately and swiftly turns into a scooter!

Pretty cool, right?

It’s entirely plastic as well so no need to worry about any metal parts causing any injuries whatsoever. And for even more added safety:

  • The wheels are wide.
  • The platform is wide and low.
  • The handlebars are easy to grasp.
  • There’s even a basket for their things!

If you’re looking for a scooter meant truly for toddlers, then this might just be the best scooter exclusively meant for toddlers.

PROS
  • Perfect as very first scooter
  • Can sit down as well as stand up
CONS
  • Expensive
  • Meant exclusively for toddlers, will out grow quickly

Y Glider Deluxe - Good For Steering

scooters for toddlers

Learning to steer is often the trickiest and most intimidating parts of getting on a scooter.

Even for adults, admit it, you can feel a bit uneasy at times! That’s okay, we won’t tell.

To help with this, Y Glider has a unique steering mechanism to help your child learn to steer if they’ve never done it before and allows you to adjust it as they learn and get better.

Now we bet you’re wondering: How do they do this?

Their “learn, grow, pro” system actually allows you to adjust the lean of the scooter as they practice.

First starting off? Make it super easy for them to turn corners.

As they learn? Challenge them a little bit!

You can adjust the lean making the turning more natural and more similar to what they’d experience on a real two-wheel scooter.

This also comes in 12 different colors so your child is bound to find something they’ll love.

PROS
  • 12 different colors
  • Unique steering mechanism
CONS
  • Expensive

Best Scooter for Toddlers - Buyer's Guide

Buying a scooter can be a difficult task, but it doesn’t have to be.

There are a couple of things that you should be on the lookout for.

Wheel Placement

Is your child a bit more advanced with scooters?

Or perhaps they’re just starting out.

Either way:

Be aware.

Just about all the scooters on our list come with three wheels but there are two different arrangements they can be in.

Two in the front.

Or two in the back.

For most kids, two in the front is much easier to steer and is better for beginners.

Deck Height

Again, this has to do with how advanced your child is.

The lower the deck is to the ground, the easier it is to control.

Light Up

The last more minor factor, but still important.

Does it light up?

Trust us – if it doesn’t and your kid sees one that does,

It’ll be back to the drawing board for you.

Conclusion

There were 18 great scooters for us to choose from as the best scooter for toddlers.

However, you know the drill by now.

There can only be one winner, so which one is it?

For us, the answer was obvious.

The Razor Kixi Mixi Scooter is the best scooter for toddlers for 2018.

What sold us is the fact that you can easily add and remove the third wheel! So what starts off as the perfect scooter for your toddler, will quickly grow to the perfect scooter for your six-year-old.
