Pools are both a blessing and a curse. On those hot summer days when you’re having a nice cold beverage, laying in your float with the sun beating down on you, with half of your body in the water to stay nice and cold – you couldn’t possibly imagine your life without a pool.

However, after work when you’re forced to come home and clean the pool because it’s been two weeks since anybody’s cleaned it and it takes you three hours to clean, you kind of wish you didn’t even have a pool.

To avoid the second part, you want it to be as easy to clean your pool as possible.

1

Swimline Hydro Tools 8145 - Easy to Set Up

pool vacuum head amazon

The very first pool vacuum head that we have up is from Swimline with the Hydro Tools 8145. We’re starting off strong with a vacuum head that we absolutely love. First off, we want to point out the shape. It’s the perfect shape! It makes sense to have a triangle shaped vacuum head so it can get in those corners.

It’ll get in corners much easier than a vacuum head that’s shaped like a rectangle. Yes, of course, you can still clean the corners of your pool with a rectangular vacuum head but the triangular one truly does make it that much easier.

It’s a decent weight as well at 2.8 pounds. In fact, it’s specifically weighted in certain areas in order to make it stay close to the ground in your pool. Vacuum heads that aren’t weighted run the risk of not staying flush against the floor or worse yet, floating up to the top of the pool which just makes your job harder.

Not cool.

The brushes on this are also angled making for a super quick pick up of debris. It also fits both 1 1/4” and 1 1/2” vacuum hoses and features a snap-adapt handle so it’s super easy to assemble.

Once it arrives, you’re essentially good to go straight out of the box. No fuss and no waiting. While you can technically use it with whatever material you wish, it is specifically a vinyl pool vacuum head.

You’ll definitely see a decreased performance if you don’t use it on one of those two types of pools.

All in all, this is a decent little pool cleaner for the price. Is it the fanciest one on the market? Not necessarily. Is it a pool vacuum head that’s of decent quality and will get the job done for possibly a few years?

Absolutely.

And as for the price – it’s less than $20 the last time we checked, so you really can’t complain. And if you want to have a backup, Amazon sells a two-pack for a few dollars off. Can’t go wrong with that.

PROS
  • Easily cleans hard-to-reach places
  • Great on fiberglass and vinyl
CONS
  • Not great on concrete
2

Splash Pools 20320 - Great Budget Option

vinyl pool vacuum head

Next, on our list, we have a fiery little vacuum head from Splash Pools! This is a great budget option if you need a quick fix or maybe you’re saving up for a super expensive pool vacuum head.

More on the price later. This little guy is pretty wide and measures 13.75 inches by 6.5 inches. This is wider than most vacuums heads which will ultimately save you time as it’ll require fewer passes across your pool floor.

Take note – this head is designed specifically for vinyl liner pools. Anything other than that and you might not experience optimal performance. It has a unique brush pattern that really helps it to do a pretty decent job picking up dirt and debris of all sizes.

The pattern channels the debris directly to the suction, creating a little channel of sorts to guide the dirt. It also features cast iron weights helping it hug the pool floor, making sure it doesn’t miss a thing.

This will fit all hoses measuring 1 1/4” and 1 1/2” as well as all standard telescopic poles.

Because of its design, it really excels in pools that are very very flat.

If the bottom of your pool isn’t completely flat or if for some reason there are a lot of stairs or twists and turns, you might experience a bit of trouble keeping it completely flush to the ground.

Like we said, this is the perfect budget option if you don’t want to spend a lot of money for whatever reason. For that reason, we recommend maybe picking up two of these – just to be safe.

PROS
  • Good combo of rectangular and triangular shape
  • Great price
CONS
  • Not the heaviest on the market
3

Hydro Tools 8165 - Good For Concrete

what is the best pool vacuum head

Alright alright, coming up next is the Hydro Tools 8165! We hate to admit it, but we think we fell in love with a pool vacuum head. Is that possible?

Well, apparently it is.

It may not be the fanciest looking thing on the market but boy does it get the job done. This head is weighted and is designed for specifically for concrete pools, so be aware of that.

best concrete pool vacuum head

It’s hard to find concrete pool vacuum head reviews and when you read them, you’ll see people complaining about how it doesn’t work on their pool or didn’t pick up the debris or just wouldn’t stay on their pool floor.

Then come to find out, they were using it on the wrong type of pool. Shocking that it wasn’t working! So just be aware of what you’re buying.

This vacuum head will fit both 1 1/4” and 1 1/2” vacuum hoses with ease and the side brushes you see will make it even easier.

Where this really shines is that the vacuum head is super flexible making it easier than ever to get into hard-to-reach places.

Because of the flexibility, not only will you have an easy time cleaning the floor but you’ll also be able to clean the walls with ease – something not every pool vacuum head can say.

It also features eight different wheels which allow it to glide easily across your pool floor without getting stuck whatsoever.

All these great features and we haven’t even gotten to the price yet! It’s very reasonably priced and will cost you around $20. And if you’re the cautious type and want to have a back-up (just in case), then you can buy two in a bundle on Amazon and save yourself a couple bucks.

Never hurts to be prepared?

This looks deceptively simple but it truly gets the job done. We think you’ll love the Hydro Tools 8165.

PROS
  • Great for concrete
  • Very flexible
CONS
  • Not good for vinyl

Hydro Tools 8131 - Another Perfect Budget Option

best pool vacuum head

Next down the pipeline is the previous pool vacuum head’s cousin – the Hydro Tools 8131. This is another great budget option that’s also sturdy and very user-friendly. It’s universal and easily will fit on either a 1 1/4” vacuum hose or a 1 1/2” vacuum hose.

Hydro Tools makes a wide range of pool vacuum heads, and also other pool cleaning accessories and are very trusted in the industry.

This style is a bit different than any of the others on our list. It’s a ‘butterfly’ design that attempts to combine some of the benefits of a rectangular vacuum head and a triangular vacuum head.

We have to admit that this head could definitely use a little more weight to it and is one of the lighter ones on our list.

So, if you have an above-ground pool or any other pool that’s not very deep, you might struggle a little bit keeping it flush since there won’t be as much water pressure keeping it down.

However, with just a tiny bit of extra strength, you shouldn’t have too much of a problem keeping it down.

This is made of plastic but it’s made out of sturdy plastic. This little guy is only a little over 10 bucks and for that price, it’s one of the sturdier vacuum heads that we’ve come across.

One thing that we do absolutely want to caution against is not to leave it laying out in the sun for extended periods of time! The plastic is strong, but combined with all the pool chemicals, if it’s left out in the sun for days on end you might end up seeing a little bit of cracking.

So save yourself the drama later on and just throw it in your shed or at least underneath a tree – anywhere that will shield it from the sun. All in all, a decent purchase and you don’t have much to lose.

PROS
  • Amazing price
  • Fits 1.25" and 1.5" hoses
CONS
  • Can crack if left out in the sun

Hayward SP1068 - Thoughtful Design

pool vacuum head with brush

We are making a return to our personal favorite design with the triangular pool vacuum head from Hayward with the Hayward SP1068. We love this design for a couple of different reasons.

First, of course, is the triangle shape. It’s really just the most versatile and most flexible shape you can use.

While it may not cover as much ground as a rectangular shape, we think the benefit of it being able to go virtually anywhere – including really tight corners, far outweighs the downside.

We also love the see-thru design. It allows you to more easily see exactly where you’re going allowing you to get the job done even faster.

Hayward SP1068 Vinyl Vacuum Head Parts

The brushes are tough and do a good job at not only collecting debris but also at getting algae to come lose and collecting the smallest of dust particles.

Something to point out, it isn’t necessarily weighted but it does have an optional weight package you can purchase if you really want it to hug your floor.

With that being said, the weight of the product itself is still 2.55 pounds which is heavier than some of the other “weighted” vacuum heads anyway. So it still does a decent job of staying close to the floor.

This, of course, fits all standard hoses – either 1 1/4” or 1 1/2” will do. One good thing about this design as well is that all the parts are individually replaceable. So if one tiny part breaks, you don’t necessarily have to go out and purchase an entirely new unit. You’re able to just purchase what you need and swap it out.

This is a bit pricier than some of the other units we’ve reviewed and is right around $40 at the time of this review.

However, you can feel the sturdiness of it from the first time you use it and we think it’s well worth the money.

PROS
  • Can see through to bottom of the pool
  • Very sturdy
CONS
  • A bit expensive
6

PoolSupplyTown Heavy-Duty - Great Commercial-Grade Head

vinyl pool vacuum head

All the pool vacuum heads we’ve reviewed so far have been for use exclusively in your personal pool. None of them were really heavy duty enough to truly be used in a professional setting.

Until now, that is. PoolSupplyTown has made an extremely heavy-duty pool vacuum head at a perfectly reasonable price that you can either use at home if you wish or is strong enough to be used in a professional setting as well.

Be careful, however – while most other vacuum heads will attach to either a 1 1/4” or a 1 1/2” hose, this one attaches exclusively a 1 1/2” hose.

This guy is definitely weighted as well and weighs 4.7 pounds – more than double some others on our list. It easily maintains contact with the pool floor ensuring you won’t miss even the smallest speck of dust. It features a chrome-plated metal handle for super easy maneuverability.

There’s also long-lasting urethane wheels equipped with ball bearings to make double sure that everything is running smoothly.

best vacuum pool head wheel

This vacuum head really does the job and in all honesty, will probably outlast your pool. And it’s at a great price! This is definitely a top contender for the best pool vacuum head.

It’s flexible, it’s sturdy, it’s wide, it’s heavy, and it easily glides across the bottom of your pool. It pretty much does anything you could ask of a vacuum head besides sing and dance.

But do you honestly want your pool vacuum head to do that? Okay, yeah that’d be pretty cool actually…

One thing we do want to caution is that since it is so great at picking up debris if you use it on vinyl, be careful that it doesn’t get stuck going around tight corners. If it does then no worries – just pull it straight up to avoid any further issues.

The price is also pretty reasonable and is priced well below $50. Not bad for a commercial-grade vacuum head that easily competes with ones that sell for much, much more. Give this vacuum head from PoolSupplyTown a try. It’s one of the best commercial inground pool vacuum heads.

PROS
  • Sturdy wheels
  • Commercial-grade performance
CONS
  • Doens't fit 1.25" hoses

Swimline 8150 - Most Bang For Your Buck

pool vacuum head amazon

This next pool vacuum head might just give you the best bang for your buck. It’s the perfect balance between quality price. Isn’t that what we’re all always trying to achieve with every product that we buy?

This Swimline 8150 weighted flex vacuum head features an extra wide design at 14 inches! Pretty decent if you ask us.

This will fit both standard sizes of vacuum hoses – 1 1/4” and also 1 1/2”. The handle is Snap-Adapt so it’s super easy to set up and you’ll be vacuuming that pool of yours minutes after it arrives.

It’s also extremely powerful and picks up both larger and small debris. It can get anything from sand to leaves. It also does a pretty decent job at breaking up algae on the bottom of your pool.

It might take a couple of passes to get that, but it does a much better job than most.

This also rolls very smoothly and it won’t require much effort on your part to try and control where it goes.

Between the power, design, and brushes – this is a very well thought out vacuum head that exceeded our expectations, especially at the price point (under $20). If you bought this with your eyes closed or received it as a gift and had no idea as to what the price was, you would’ve guessed it cost in the range of $30 to $50.

Lucky for you, you would be wrong!

If you’re not ready to commit to a super expensive pool vacuum head but still want something that’s powerful and is going to do the job, you may have found a friend in Swimline 8150.

This is definitely going to be a top contender for the best pool vacuum head. But you’ll just have to wait until the end of the article to find out.

PROS
  • Good price
  • Gets both small and large debris
CONS
  • Not as good as a triangular design in corners

FibroPRO - Professional Grade Quality

best pool vacuum heads

We wanted to make sure we included one more professional-grade pool vacuum head before finishing up our list and we confidently chose the FibroPro. This is one of the widest pool vacuum heads on our list and measures at 14.4”.

Be careful as this vacuum head doesn’t connect to both 1 1/4” and 1 1/2” – it’ll only work with 1 1/2” so be sure to keep that in mind. The handle is metal handle is also chrome plated so it’s extra durable and also super easy to move around the pool.

You’ll easily be able to get into the tightest of corners in your pool without too much hassle.

The wheels on the FibroPro also allow it to easily glide against the bottom of the pool and help it to hug the bottom to pick up the tiniest of tiny dirt particles. The wheels are made out of long-lasting urethane equipped with metal ball bearings to make it glide effortlessly.

Fibropro pool vacuum head

Another amazing aspect is that it won’t stick to the floor of your pool. This pool vacuum head is also more suitable for different types of materials on the floor and is much more versatile.

Because it is professional grade, it has to be more versatile. This is meant to be used on a variety of different surfaces across a bunch of different types of pools.

It also does a great job at cleaning the walls of the pools, much better than most. It’ll easily hug the wall and doesn’t require much power on your end to keep it up against the wall.

If you’re looking for a commercial grade pool vacuum head at a reasonable price, then you’ll want to go with the FibroPro.

It’s efficient and versatile and does an amazing job at getting around all the tight corners of your pool – even on the stairs. We can confidently say you won’t be disappointed with the FibroPRO so give it a go – and for the price, you don’t have much to lose.

Best Pool Vacuum Head - Buyer's Guide

Pools can be a hassle and you’re purchasing your pool vacuum head to make it less of hassle. So the last thing you want to do is cause yourself a headache while trying to purchase it.

To help you out, we’ve created a buyer’s guide to help you keep track of all the important features to consider when you’re shopping.

Of course, what vacuum head you get will ultimately depend on your exact needs but there are still going to be a few key things that you should be looking out for no matter what.

Take a look!

Shape

There are three main shapes that a vacuum head can come in – rectangular, triangular, and butterfly which is sort of a combination of the first two. They each have their pros and cons. Rectangular pool heads cover more ground much faster than either of the other two so if you have a larger pool, this could be the way to go.

Triangular vacuum heads, however, are much better at getting into tight corners and going up/down stairs so if your pool has a lot of difficult places, then the triangular pool vacuum head might be the one for you.

Pool Material

Some pool vacuum heads are designed specifically for a certain type of material and don’t really work that well on certain types of material.

So be careful! If you buy one made for concrete but your pool is vinyl, it’s probably not going to do a very good job of picking up debris.

You would specifically need a vinyl pool vacuum head. If you’re looking for one that’s versatile, then you’ll want to look at more commercial-grade cleaners.

These generally will do a decent job at cleaning up on any type of pool surface.

Wheels

Do you have trouble getting the vacuum through the pool sometimes?

You might want to consider a vacuum head that has a lot of wheels on it.

This can be extremely helpful in making it easier for the vacuum to glide across the bottom of your pool. Again, you’ll mostly find wheels on the commercial-grade pool vacuum heads.

Conclusion

We took a look at some really great pool vacuum heads today. They were all different shapes and sizes and worked on all different types of pools. Some were commercial-grade while were some were really great budget options.

It’s always tough to pick a winner but still – there was one pool vacuum head that stood out above the rest and really rose to the top.

You must’ve been wondering “what is the best pool vacuum head” the whole article. Have any guesses as to which one it was? One of the Hydro Tools? The one by Hayward?

Or perhaps it was the Swimline that we saved for last? Well, wonder no longer! We are about to reveal the best pool vacuum head of 2018.

Alright, friends! The best pool vacuum head is…… the Swimline 8150!

We absolutely love this vacuum head. It’s super wide so you’ll be able to cover a lot of ground very quickly, it has 8 wheels to help it glide easily across the bottom of the pool, it fits both 1.25” and 1.5” hoses, and it’s just an extremely powerful vacuum head!

Couple this with an already powerful vacuum and it will make cleaning your pool a breeze. It’s the perfect price and quality. It really does give you a lot of bang for your buck and allows you to get a product that feels commercial-grade without having to pay commercial prices.

We love it.

As always, thanks for reading and we really hope this made purchasing a pool vacuum head slightly less confusing and that we guided you to make the right decision.

Cheers to having an effortlessly clean pool.
