Best Mosquito Killer 2020 – The Ultimate Buying Guide

Picture the scene – it’s a warm summer night, you’ve invited all your good friends over, and you’re sitting around a fire having a few of your beverage of choice (cold beer, hopefully).

But as the night goes on you find yourself swatting away what seems like an endless stream of everyone’s worst enemy: mosquitoes! You may be able to tolerate one or two but unfortunately, too many of these pesky guys really do have the ability to ruin a night.

Especially because not only will they ruin your night, but they’ll ruin the next week of your life when you wake up in the morning and realize you have 10 bites. Ugh, you’ll be itching those for the next week.

What you need is the best mosquito killer on the market.

Let’s face it, sometimes bug spray just won’t cut it. Mosquitoes are brave and bug spray just doesn’t work a lot of the time.

However, there’s something out there that’s a little more…. effective. A mosquito killer. Fortunately for you (but unfortunately for the mosquitoes), it does exactly what it says. It attracts mosquitoes and other insects then zaps them! No more mosquitoes to worry about.

Of course, though, you’ll want the best one on the market. Check out our list of the 9 best mosquito killers on the market to make your summer nights that much more enjoyable.

Top 9 Best Mosquito Killers For 2020

Let’s take a quick look at a list of the best mosquito killers on the market, along with a couple of key features before getting into the reviews.

Great! Now let’s get into all the details and figure out which one will be named the best mosquito killer of 2020.

Aspectek 20W – Perfect For Indoor and Outdoor Use

The first question that you probably have is how do these even attract the bugs to begin with? Well, you know how your porch light always has tons of moths flocking to it?

These mosquito killers capitalize on the same principle. This one, in particular, uses two extremely powerful UV bulbs to attract mosquitoes as well as flies, moths, and anything else that flies really to it and then once they go past the protective mesh screen – ZAP!

That’s also how it’s able to keep you and also your family safe. There’s a mesh screen on the front of this that’s large enough to let insects in but protective enough to keep you from accidentally zapping yourself.

Plus, this is powerful enough to kill mosquitoes, not humans. So the worst that would happen is a little electric shock.

A common misconception is that mosquito killers use chemicals to attract them but this couldn’t be further from the truth! It solely uses UV lights to attract them so this whole contraption is 100% chemical free.

Now another question you’re probably wondering is where do these mosquitoes go?

Do they just drop dead to the floor and then you’ll have to spend your night picking up dead mosquitoes off the ground? Thankfully the answer is no. The Aspectek 20W actually includes a tray in the bottom that you easily remove, empty in the trash, and put back.

You can even close your eyes while you do it so you don’t have to see the carnage. Oh – and the electric grid itself is self-cleaning.

This is also super easy to put wherever you want it. You can either easily hang out or even just set it on your porch (this even works inside). It only weighs 3 pounds but will protect you up to 6000 square feet! That’s a huge range for such a small machine.

This machine also comes with a 1-year warranty and 30-day money back guarantee. Your itchy skin will thank you for buying the Aspectek 20W.

What We Loved

  • Good for indoor and outdoor use
  • Easy to clean

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not circular – doesn’t attract from all sides

Teza Insect Killer Zapper – Different Wattage to Choose From

Next up is a powerful little killer from Teza. Since mosquito killers are chemical free, most are able to be used both indoors and outdoors. However, this one from Teza is actually not waterproof so it should primarily be used indoors, or at least somewhere outside that’s shielded from the elements.

This is a great indoor mosquito killer. This base model for this lamp comes in 15 watts and this should suit most needs.

However, they have optional upgrades up to 120 watts if you wish to have a more powerful lamp on deck.

The voltage is very high and is powerful enough for mosquitoes but also for moths and some larger insects as well. It’s very effective and is durable enough to be left on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you so desire.

The initial bulbs it comes with should easily last you anywhere from 8,000 hours to 10,000 hours. Not bad. Then all you need to do after that is replace only the bulbs which is easy to do and much cheaper than having to buy an entirely new unit.

The best place to put this is not too close to where you’ll be as to attract all the insects directly towards you, but also not too far so that it’s not helpful.

You want it at the perfect distance so that it’s effective in ridding the immediate area of pesky bugs but not so close that you’ll soon find yourself in the midst of an army of bugs.

All in all, this is a great discreet option, at least in comparison to the last unit. It’s much smaller with the option to upgrade the wattage if you really want something that you know will get the job done.

However, we think that the 15 W or 40 W will suit most people just fine.

What We Loved

  • Can choose wattage that works for you
  • Very discreet

What We Didn’t Like

  • High wattage is expensive

Flowtron BK-15D – Powerful and Efficient

If you are looking for one of the most powerful and efficient outdoor mosquito killers on the market today then you have stumbled across the perfect killer – the Flowtron BK-15D. It may look small but it has a huge killing radius.

It actually comes in a few different models with the base being a 1/2 acre and going up to 1 1/2 acres.

You can also get a couple of add-ons as well to make it a little more efficient. You can choose to get it with a hook that goes in the ground to allow you to hang it.

You can also choose to get mosquito attractant to lure them in and then zap them if they’re really a huge problem in your area. Also recommended by the company is that this shouldn’t be placed within 25 feet of the area intended for human activity – it really is that powerful and attractive for mosquitoes and other insects.

As we mentioned before this is recommended for outdoor use only. You definitely wouldn’t want this hanging around your garage, porch or anywhere else that close.

It will, however, still protect you because it has such a large killing radius. It’s also not recommended for indoors because there’s nothing to catch the bugs. They’ll simply zap and then fall to the ground, so you’ll definitely want this a little bit away from where everyone will be hanging out.

Overall this is a great Flowtron electronic insect killer. It will keep a 1/2 acre (or up to 1 1/2 acre) of your property mosquito-free for a perfectly reasonable price.

It’s durable and will not rust, crack, or fade and also features a two-year limited warranty so you know that Flowtron stands by its product. If you have a big yard or a big mosquito problem, then the Flowtron BK-15D is the mosquito killer for you.

What We Loved

  • Very powerful
  • 2 year warranty

What We Didn’t Like

  • Can’t really use indoors

Hoont Electronic Indoor Bug Zapper – Perfect Indoor Solution

The Hoont Electronic Indoor Bug Zapper is your perfect indoor solution for killing mosquitoes and other bugs but is also versatile and powerful enough to be used out in the middle of your yard.

Note that when we say ‘indoors’, we obviously don’t mean your living room. We mean a garage, screen in porch, deck, or something of the like. We figured you knew but just wanted to clarify.

This bug zapper from Hoont features a super high-intensity ultraviolet bulb that attracts not just mosquitoes but all pesky flying annoying bugs. They’ll run into the electrical grid and then ZAP!

They’re gone just like that. It’ll kill a limitless number of bugs that get collected in a tray at the bottom so it’s easy for you to clean. In fact, this is the primary difference between an indoor and outdoor bug zapper.

An outdoor mosquito killer will often just allow the mosquitoes to drop to the floor while an indoor one will have a tray that collects the bugs for easy disposal.

This is 100% safe to operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

The grid will never clog and the tray is easy and quick to clean. It easily spreads light in all four directions and covers up to 600 square feet which is a decent area for any backyard space. Note however that this is not waterproof so if you are using it outdoors make sure it’s either covered or you bring it in so it doesn’t get rained on.

It probably goes without saying, but this Hoont Electronic Indoor Bug Zapper is 100% chemical and pesticide free. In fact, that’s what we love so much about this mosquito killers.

You don’t have to worry about covering your body with any harmful chemicals. This indoor mosquito zapper from Hoont is a powerful but unobtrusive killer that will keep your patio, deck, or backyard free from pesky bugs all summer. We cannot recommend this enough.

What We Loved

  • Good for indoors and outdoors
  • Safe to operate 24/7

What We Didn’t Like

  • Light is a bit bright

Flowtron FC-8800 – Commercial-Grade Killer

At 120 Watts, this mosquito zapper from Flowtron is… powerful, to say the least. The Flowtron FC-8800 is perfect if you live in a place that’s hot year-round or just super humid and is constantly plagued by insects. The range on this killer is insane. It will protect you, your family, and your animals for up to two acres!

This is easily one of the widest ranges of a mosquito killer on the market today. This is the perfect solution if you own a lot of land.

With such a big range and such a big wattage, you would expect a piercingly bright light, right? Well, this isn’t the case with the Flowtron FC-8800. It’s actually a perfectly reasonable brightness and does cast a bit of a light, but nothing unmanageable or obtrusive.

This is truly commercial grade and is recommended for use around barns, or even at commercial dumpsters or trash receptacles. Also, while a lot of outdoor mosquito killers don’t feature a collection tray, this one does so you don’t have to worry about a giant pile of dead bugs right beneath it.

Depending on your exact needs, you’re also able to either hang this vertically or horizontally.

Although if you want to use the collection tray, you’ll want to make sure you hang this vertically.

However, using the collection tray is indeed optional.

If you don’t care about the dead bugs or would rather just allow nature to take its course, then you can leave the tray out and just let them fall directly onto the ground.

We love this mosquito killer.

It is definitely one of the more expensive ones on the market at over $200 but it’s for good reason. It’s commercial grade with the ability to be used at your house if you’re just sick of having to deal with the sheer number of bugs.

However, be warned that this thing is heavy duty. So, if you don’t live in an area with a ton of bugs or just want to prevent the occasional mosquito, then this probably isn’t for you. If you live in Florida however or own a farm where you see a lot of insects – then this is the perfect solution for you.

What We Loved

  • Commercial-grade
  • Reasonable brightness

What We Didn’t Like

  • Very expensive

Stinger Cordless – Perfect Portable Solution

If the previous mosquito killer was the perfect commercial-grade solution, then this is the perfect casual at-home solution for keeping mosquitos away. It’s reasonably priced, convenient, and best of all – it’s cordless! It’s portable, cordless, and rechargeable. No need to worry about tracking down an extension cord or worrying about it extending your electric bill.

Charge it up for a little bit and you’ll get 3.5 hours of blissful, bug-free enjoyment out of your backyard.

It has a 3.5-hour run-time and then when it stops zapping bugs, you’re actually able to use it in a lantern-only mode. And it doesn’t even look half-bad in your hard so we highly recommend it.

It uses black UV light technology to attract bugs and of course, features a collection tray that’s easy-to-remove and will keep all the bugs from cluttering up your yard.

Stinger recommends that you position this zapper between the source of the insects (i.e. the yard, or woods) and the area that you want to be protected. But still, make sure that it’s not farther than 10-14 ft. from human activity.

For being such a small, portable device it actually covers a pretty large area.

You’ll get protection in a 625-square foot radius. As we mentioned you’ll get 3.5 hours of protection but it does take 3 hours to fully recharge so make sure you don’t forget to put this little guy on the charger overnight.

This Stinger Cordless mosquito zapper definitely delivers.

It also features an optional mosquito lure you can put inside to further attract mosquitoes although if you’re looking for a completely chemical-free option then it still works perfectly fine without it. Overall this is perfect if you just want some extra protection while you hang outside at night or if you don’t have access to an outlet or extra-long extension cord.

Stinger does not disappoint with the only cordless mosquito zapper on our list.

What We Loved

  • Don’t have to plug in
  • Doubles as a light when zapper battery dies

What We Didn’t Like

  • Only lasts 3.5 hours

Flowtron Insect Killer 40 W – Great For Residential or Commercial Use

In case you couldn’t tell, we love Flowtron. They’re one of the most trusted brands when it comes to hiring someone for your mosquito assassin. They’ve been in the business for a while and offer a wide range of products varying from simple home solutions, to more powerful commercial-grade solutions.

So far we’ve reviewed both types from Flowtron but this one lands us right in the middle at 40 W. You get the best of both worlds.

This is a powerful little guy and definitely gives off a little bit of light.

Because of that reason, it’s recommended you keep it at least 15 feet from your door otherwise you might get a bit bothered by all the light that comes in. It’s also powerful enough for not just mosquitoes, but for larger moths, crickets, and other larger bugs that you might find on your property.

The Flowtron Insect Killer 40 W is so powerful it can actually make a permanent difference in the number of bugs in your yard. If you’re constantly experiencing these pests at all times of day and not just at night – then consider leaving it on for 24 hours a day for two weeks when you first get it.

This will do an amazing job at attracting and then killing bugs straight through and then after that, you’ll only need to use it from dusk to dawn. You will seriously notice a huge difference.

If you don’t want to commit to a $200 or $300 commercial-grade mosquito killer but also want something a bit more powerful than your average 15 W zapper, then this is the perfect compromise.

It will actually make a difference in your yard without breaking the bank. We cannot recommend this zapper enough.

What We Loved

  • Good for residential or commercial
  • Can make permanent difference in yard mosquito population

What We Didn’t Like

  • Light is brighter than others

Burgess 1443 Propane Insect Fogger – Perfect Insecticide Solution

For all the other products on our list, we’ve focused on one specific type of mosquito killer and that’s an insect zapper. These are amazing, chemical-free ways to keep your yard free of mosquitoes and other insects for sure.

But for those who don’t mind other methods or have a problem so invasive that the zappers just don’t cut it, consider the Burgess 1443 Propane Insect Fogger.

It is definitely the best mosquito killer spray.

This is the same system used by professionals to kill mosquitoes and will kill (and repel!) mosquitoes, biting flies, and any other flying insects for up to six hours.

It’s also super-efficient. You can actually treat a 5000-square foot yard in just under 10 minutes. This is going to be much more efficient if you have a massive yard than just a zapper. It’s also perfectly safe to enter the treated area in about five minutes – you just have to wait until all the fog clears.

It’s propane fueled so you don’t have to worry about plugging it in or any other hassle. Just walk around with it around your yard and the bugs will die and stay way for hours to come.

Of course, this is used in conjunction with insecticide. On average, one quart of insecticide will treat about 1/2 acre of land. While that may seem like a lot, this actually uses much less insecticide than conventional sprays. Fogging is surprisingly efficient.

Again, we know that not everybody likes using insecticide and if you’re looking for a chemical-free solution then this isn’t for you.

If, however, you’re looking for something that is 100% absolutely guaranteed to work and work fast, then you might consider this as a viable option. Or maybe you’ve tried mosquito zappers in the past and just haven’t seen any results. You will absolutely see results with the Burgess 1443 Propane Insect Fogger.

It’s portable, it’s efficient, and it’s powerful. Burgess does not disappoint with this product.

What We Loved

  • 100% effective
  • Clears a large area very quickly

What We Didn’t Like

  • Uses chemicals

Thermacell MR-GJ – Great for Hunting

We decided to switch things up a little bit for the last product on our list and actually include a truly portable mosquito killer! While the other mosquito zappers have primarily been geared towards stationary use in your yard, this is handheld and 100% portable. It’s the perfect solution for camping, hiking, or any other activity where you’re on the move.

It creates a 225-square foot protection zone and effectively repels mosquitoes, biting flies, and any other flying creature you don’t want around you.

This thing is super lightweight (.7 lbs), cordless, and super easy to transport. It’s virtually odorless and is also silent. While this doesn’t zap mosquitoes, it efficiently repels them using DEET-free repellent.

This is much more efficient and effective than traditional mosquito repellant. Thermacell stands by their methods as well and offers a 1-year warranty on the MR-GJ. Note, however, that you will have to buy replacement cartridges as this will need to be refilled after continued use.

It comes in a variety of different colors as well, including multiple camouflage options.

This is a perfect solution to use while hunting as this is also silent. Once you go hunting with it, you’ll wonder how you’ve been hunting all these years without it.

This definitely isn’t as powerful as the other stationary ones and if you’re having a large gathering with a lot of people, you’ll want to spring for one of those. The product is definitely geared more towards personal use and if you use it that way, you will see positive results and be happy you bought it.

What We Loved

  • Good for hunting
  • Extremely portable
  • Comes in camouflage

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not chemical-free

How To Pick The Right Mosquito Killer

If you’re new to the mosquito killer world, then it can be a bit confusing as to how these products actually work. Is the one I’m buying using chemicals?

Will I have to plug it in?

How long does it last? What kind of radius does it create? Will it catch the bugs? These are all questions that might be going through your mind.

You’ll want to check out our buyer’s guide to make sure you truly are buying the best mosquito killer on the market.

Chemical Free vs Repellent

This will be the first thing you want to decide. We personally recommend the chemical-free option and that is what this list primarily focuses on. If however, you’ve already tried a zapper, then consider going for an insecticide. For 98% of cases, a mosquito zapper will do the job – especially for residential use. Zappers essentially just use light and warmth to attract the bugs and then with the electrical grid, will quickly and humanely zap them.

Bug Tray

The next thing you’ll want to consider is if it comes with a tray to catch all the dead bugs. While most will come with a tray and then you can elect to either use it or not without affecting how the product works, some bug zappers that are specifically for outdoor use won’t come with a tray at all.

So if you’ll be using this in a garage or on a patio and don’t want a giant pile of dead bugs below the zapper, make sure you buy one that will catch them in a tray.

This will mainly affect how big the bugs the zapper is able to kill and also the range. If you’re just looking for something to kill mosquitoes and other smaller flies, then 15 W should be fine.

If, however you want something that’ll tacker beetles, moths, and other larger pesky insects – then consider upping your wattage.

This is another important factor! Check out how big the radius is that the zapper will protect you from. If you have a smaller backyard or just need it for your patio, then you shouldn’t need anything too crazy.

If you have a larger backyard however that has a decent amount of acreage, then make sure you get something that will actually protect you all the way around. The last thing you want to do is purchase a zapper that doesn’t even protect you throughout your entire yard.

Battery Powered

If you live in an apartment or don’t have access to a super long extension cord, you’ll want to consider a battery-powered mosquito killer.

While a majority you’ll have to plug in, there are a few on the market that are indeed battery powered. However, these tend to be slightly less powerful and are made more for a use-by-use basis and aren’t used to truly significantly reduce the mosquito population in your yard.

Conclusion – The Top Mosquito Killer of 2020

All of the mosquito killers on our list do an amazing job at keeping your yard free of mosquitoes and other insects that annoy you during the summer.

And if you purchase any of them, we can guarantee you’ll have a much more enjoyable experience outside. However, there can still only be one that comes out on top as the best. There can only be one mosquito killer that’s dubbed the best mosquito killer of 2020.

But which one is it? While we have some pretty powerful killers on there, it’s not always about sheer power all of the time. Sometimes you have to consider versatility, portability, and ease of use. So which are we going to crown the winner? The wait is finally over!

The best mosquito killer of 2020 goes to the Flowtron BK-15D. This zapper finds the perfect balance between commercial-grade and residential use.

It also gives you options to upgrade so if you only need it for 1/2 acre, then you can purchase the base model. If you do want to upgrade for additional costs if you have a bigger lawn, then you can easily do that as well. It also allows you to add a hook for easy hanging and also extra mosquito attractants if you really want to make sure you zap every single on in your yard. All in all, this is the best way to get rid of mosquitoes in your yard.

Thanks for reading and we hope this list is going to make your summer a lot more enjoyable. No matter which mosquito killer you choose for your yard, you’re well on your way to less swatting, less itching, and more fun.
